Clif Poodry: The use of jam chucks for making turned “boxes” and other items
MCW Vice President, and Librarian, Clif Poodry, will make a small, Drozda-like box. (Cindy Drozda is one of the finest turners working today, and her works and style are instantly recognizable.) In the world of woodturning, a “box” is a small, lidded vessel made to hold little items. One of the tricks to making a box is learning how to hold the pieces on the lathe firmly and efficiently – jam chucks are a key. Proficiency in making jam chucks will make you a more confident and productive turner. You may recall that Eliot Feldman did a demo for us on making a box a year and a half ago, but we still don’t see many boxes in our S&T sessions. These little forms can be a bit fussy until you get the hang of it, but they are very rewarding and much appreciated as gifts. Box making is an honored tradition and a hot topic now, as evidenced by an extremely lively Special Interest Night session at the 2008 Richmond AAW Symposium. For some people, making them can become addictive (see, e.g., the recent work of Mike Stafford at http://turnedwoodboxesbymike.com/). We hope this demo will encourage more of you to give them a try.

Sunday, February 21: An invitation from Mark & Nancy Supik
Please join us on Sunday, February 21 for an Open House at Mark Supik & Co. with special guest, Jerry Kermode.
Jerry will be in town from California for the American Craft Council Show (Feb. 26-28) in Baltimore where he’ll be exhibiting his beautiful bowls and demonstrating. We’ve asked Jerry to do two demos on Sunday to help spread out the crowd, so plan to come for the 11:00 AM demo OR the 2:00 PM demo (a repeat). In between shows, Mark and his staff will give a shop tour and do some demonstrations on the big lathes.

The Open House is free, but we will have a donations bowl out to help with Jerry’s travel expenses.
Jerry is a well-known woodturner who makes classic, beautiful forms that enhance the characteristics of the timbers from which they are formed. He has his own woodturning school and has demonstrated in several national symposia. More about Jerry Kermode at www.jerrykermode.com.
